Highland Park Safety

Welcome, Visitors!

Visitor and Volunteer Policies

In our efforts to keep all students and staff safe on campus, we need to know who is in our building. Everyone is required to sign in with our main office to receive a visitor's badge. If you are coming to pick up your child early, bring a picture I.D. sign your child out, and wait in the office while our office staff calls the teacher to have the student meet you in the office. Anyone without a visitor's pass will be stopped and sent back to the office to check-in.

After Hours Event Policies

In response to recent events in the surrounding neighborhood, our safety committee met to develop a policy to ensure we have coverage to supervise the school’s entrance and monitor visitors coming and going after school hours.

From now on, any evening event sponsored by an outside organization must include in their budget, pay for an hourly supervisor or, they must be able to secure a volunteer whose sole responsibility is to supervise the entrance for the duration of the event. This way, we will be able to immediately address any issues or concerns that may arise. In some cases, this will be the PTA president or Pow Wow committee lead, in others, a building administrator. For major events such as the barbecue, curriculum night etc., the school will provide supervision at the school’s cost. If the event is small enough, the parties renting the space must make sure the doors remain locked and closed the entire time.

We want to encourage the use of our school for community events, while ensuring the safety or our students, staff, families, and guests. If you need assistance entering our building after this time please call 206-252-8240, or would like to schedule an event after hours, please stop by the main office during school hours and speak with our administration.

Before School Drop-Off

City Year and Highland Park staff are constantly working together to ensure our students arrive safely to school. Our doors open at 8:25, with staff waiting in the front by the curb, in the back on the playground, and breakfast waiting in the cafeteria. Please note, there is NO adult supervision until 7:30, please do not arrive prior to this, unless enrolled in before-school care.

After School Pick-Up

Please be advised that the school's back and sides doors are locked during school hours (7:55 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.), so during these hours, please come to the front of the school, and sign-in with the office. We do not allow parents/guardians to wait for their student in the building, during school hours, and we do not allow parents to pick up students directly from class, unless they have checked-in with the main office.

Here's how after school pick-up works:

ALL Grades (without getting out of the car)

  1. Please pull your car along the curb in the front of the school and remain waiting in your car until your child arrives.
  2. Be sure your child knows where you plan to pick him/her up at dismissal.
  3. After your child is safely in your car and seat belted in, you may leave by proceeding through the parking lot.

ALL Grades (parked cars AND walkers)

  1. Park in the parking lot or side street and proceed to the blacktop in the back by the playground to pick up the student.
  2. Walkers will be dismissed only from the back doors of the building.
  3. Please accompany your child to your car.

Lost 'n' found

Lost and Found

Forget something at school? No problem, just check out our Lost and Found! Located on a table near the front staircase, we try to pick up things left on campus and keep them safe so you can easily come back for them. Although we'd like to be able to return everything to its owner, we cannot guarantee everything left at school will make it to our Lost and Found, so please make sure you hold on to your belongings! Please be advised, Highland Park is not responsible for lost items, so please make sure your student's name and classroom number are written inside the item.
